LOT 2101

WE ALWAYS START WITH SOME BUBBLY!

The House of Billecart-Salmon started in 1818 when Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon were married. This has been a family story since the beginning with Louis Salmon, brother of Elisabeth and a passionate oenologist, involved in the creation of the wines. Over seven generations, each member of the family has endeavored to continue the family tradition, staying faithful to the same motto: “Give priority to quality, strive for excellence.”  The majority of the grapes used for vinification come from a radius of 20 km around Epernay, where the Grand Crus of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay coexist in the ethereal vineyards.  The chalk cellars date from 17th and 19th centuries and stand guard over the House’s precious cargo. Over time, the wines assert themselves and the aromas develop, imprinted with all the finesse, balance and elegance which are characteristic of the personality of the House’s champagnes.  The vintage cuvées patiently wait ten years before they begin to reveal their maturity. Allowing time to play its role is behind the grandeur of Billecart-Salmon Champagnes.

Includes:

  • 6 – 750 ml 2002 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut, Cuvée Nicolas François
WS 95 “a buoyant, almost ethereal quality to this elegant Champagne, offering a rich range of flavors, long and mouthwatering, with a clean, citrus-infused finish.”
WA 97 “showing superbly, wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet. It’s full-bodied, broad and vinous, with a rich and layered core that’s underpinned by serious structure, concluding with a long and precise finish. This is one of the finest wines Billecart-Salmon has released in the last decade…”

  • 6 – 750 ml 2006 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Blanc de Blanc
WS 93 “Firm and well-knit with fragrant star anise and spring blossom notes, smoky mineral, toast and lemon flavors.”

LEFT BANK LEGENDS

This lot is legendary both for the wines included as well as the vintages from which they were produced.  All hailing from the venerable left bank of the Gironde estuary, the wines from these top producers are all cabernet sauvignon-forward Bordeaux blends.  The 2002 vintage was considered to be a very good vintage whose wines are still drinking well today.  The 1982 and 1989 vintages were considered some of the all-time great vintages in Bordeaux with 1982 considered legendary, some say the vintage of the century.  Don’t miss this opportunity to capture these beauties while they are still available.

BERINGER PRIVATE RESERVE

Beringer is known for establishing many ‘firsts’ as a leader in the California wine industry. They were one of the first gravity fed facilities and among the first to operate using hand-dug caves and cellars. They were the first to give public tours in 1934, starting a Napa Valley hospitality tradition. They are the first and only winery to have both a red and a white wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine.

Beringer Private Reserve represents the pinnacle of the Beringer portfolio. Former Chief Winemakers Myron Nightingale and Ed Sbragia created the Private Reserve program in 1977 with the goal of crafting Napa’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon.  “Beringer’s Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon” has always been a deceptively supple, soft, easy to drink wine . . . recent vintages, while taking on additional power and concentration, appear to be made in a similar flattering, velvety-textured style.” – Robert Parker

Includes:

  • 6 – 750 ml 1991 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
WS 94 “Brimming with ripe, complex, youthful juicy plum, black cherry, chocolate, currant and spicy fruit flavors. Very dark color, excellent structure and depth of flavor. Finishes with a long, complex aftertaste.”
RP 95 “It possesses a smashing bouquet of smoky, unctuously-textured black and red fruits, sweet, generous, decadently rich flavors, low acidity, and a voluptuously long, juicy finish.”

  • 6 – 750 ml 1992 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
WS 95 “Packs a load of ripe, juicy, complex fruit. The tiers of plum, black cherry, currant and spice flavors are all framed nicely by toasty, buttery oak. Combines power with grace.”
RP 96 “The opaque-colored 1992 exhibits a huge, chocolatey, smoky nose crammed with gobs of black fruits. This soft, voluptuously-textured, full-bodied wine boasts remarkable concentration and purity. It is a round, flattering, luscious style of Cabernet Sauvignon that will be hard to resist…”

A TALE OF TWO VALLEYS – THE BATTLE OF NAPA VS. SONOMA

Joined by the saddle-shaped region of Carneros and separated by the Mayacamas Mountain range, the two most famous winemaking regions in California are so close but so different.  Napa feels more confined, busier and a bit more urbane while Sonoma is more expansive, spread out and more laid back. You can hit the high road to Napa in a limo while the scenery glimmers with Michelin stars, and in Sonoma you can drive down a dirt road to a casual outdoor patio and sit at a picnic table and enjoy a fabulous tasting for $25.00.   Napa gets warm and Sonoma, while warm, is heavily influenced by the ocean breezes.  Master Sommelier Michael Jordan will compare and contrast the valleys while regaling you with stellar examples of wines made from both mountain and valley floor fruit from each region.  You’ll also enjoy an incomparable cabernet sauvignon blending seminar.

Includes:

  • A tutorial cabernet sauvignon blending seminar

  • Hors d’oeuvres and a four-course dinner with each course paired with a wine from Sonoma and Napa hosted by renowned Master Sommelier Michael Jordan.

Wines to include:

  • Selections from the Jackson Family Wines portfolio to include and will be expanded to include others:
    – Freemark Abbey
    – Brave
    – La Jota
    – Hartford Family

NOT JUST A “PORT” IN A STORM

With its mild climate, 3000 hours of sunshine per year and 850 kilometers of splendid beaches bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is the perfect holiday destination all year round. This is a country that has the oldest borders in Europe, with an exceptional range of different landscapes just a short distance away, lots of leisure activities and a unique cultural heritage where tradition and modernity blend together in perfect harmony. Its superb cuisine, fine wines and hospitable people make this a tourist paradise of the highest quality.

The trip will begin in Lisbon and then you will travel to Alentejo, where you will visit Herdade de São Miguel. It is a family-owned winery which started in 1997 and strives to produce wines that reflect quality and vigor, values that are promoted in their family work. Experience their dedication to the breeding and conservation of local species in extinction such as the ‘Mirandela’ donkey and the ‘Garrano’ horses of Gerês that in the old times were great agriculture tools and now are in extinction due to the takeover of automation in agriculture.

You will then visit Quinta de Vila Nova. The Lencastre family is of royal Portuguese lineage – descended from Antonio Pinto Garces Madureira, who was named the First Barão da Várzea do Douro by Portugal’s Queen Maria II on July 16, 1846. The family’s royal residence is Vila Nova, near the town of Peñafiel, close to the eastern border in Portugal’s Vinho Verde wine region about a 30 minute drive east from Oporto. The land has been in the family since the twelfth century and the only remnant of that time is an ivy-covered stone tower, now totally surrounded by Vila Nova (new house) that was built in the 1700’s.

You will end your tour of Portugal visiting Quinta do Vallado. Quinta do Vallado, established in 1716, is one of the oldest and most famous “Quintas” in the Douro Valley. It once belonged to the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, and still belongs to her descendants. It lies on both banks of the Corgo River, a tributary of the Douro River, near its mouth, close to the town of Peso da Régua. You will visit two of the winery’s amazing hotel properties.

Includes:

  • Two rooms for two nights in Alentejo at Alentejo Marmoris Hotel

  • Two rooms for two nights at Casas do Telhado in Peñafiel

  • Two rooms for two nights Quinta do Vallado in Douro Valley

  • Two rooms for one night at Casa do Rio Hotel and Spa

  • Arrive early into Lisbon – free day in Lisbon before heading to Alentejo

  • Full day of vineyard tours for four at Herdade de São Miguel to include tasting lunch and dinner with the family

  • Dinner with Bernardo Lancastre of Vila Nova Winery upon arrival.

  • Spend the day with Bernardo visiting Casa de Vila Nova tasting wines with lunch.

  • Harvest experience at Quinta do Vallado to include picking grapes, foot crushing, blend your own wine experience (dependent on time of year trip is booked)

  • Jeep tour of the Vallado winery up into the mountain vineyards with tasting

  • Dinner for four at Quinto do Vallado hosted by the family

  • Boat trip in the Douro River and the estate has a stunning swimming pool and offers multiple activities such as walks, bicycle rides, fishing sessions, picnics

DOMINATING DOMINUS

In the late 1960s, while attending the University of California at Davis, Christian Moueix fell in love with the Napa Valley and its wines. Moueix returned home in 1970 to manage the family vineyards in Bordeaux, including Château Pétrus, Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Château Trotanoy in Pomerol and Château Magdelaine in Saint-Émilion.

His love of Napa Valley lingered and in 1981, he discovered the historic Napanook Vineyard, a 124-acre site west of Yountville that had been the source of fruit for some of the finest Napa Valley wines of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1982, Moueix entered into a partnership to develop the vineyard and, in 1995 became its sole owner. He chose the name ‘Dominus’ or ‘Lord of the Estate’ in Latin to underscore his longstanding commitment to stewardship of the land.

Known for its complexity and balance, Dominus demonstrates the potential of a wine produced on exceptional terroir. Structured, seamless and perfectly integrated, Dominus is an elegant wine that improves with age.

Includes:

  • 12 – 750 ml 2014 Dominus Napa Valley Christian Moueix
RP 97 “a sexy, opulent, layered, multidimensional wine…”

THE JUDGEMENT OF “HARRIS”

The Paris Tasting of 1976, pitting the best wines of France against the upstart California wines, became historic instantly when the American wines were judged the best in both the red and white categories.  This is the 45th anniversary of the tasting, and we celebrate the event by recreating it for ten lucky couples.  Jackson Family Wines was the only vintner in the tasting to have two of their wines represented, Freemark Abbey Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Larry O’Brien, Master Sommelier of Jackson Family Wines will be your host to guide you through the blind tasting where you will score the wines and determine the best, just as the judges did in 1976.  The day will begin with a tasting and rating of the white wines followed by lunch where you will cleanse your palate with Champagne.  After a short break, you will return to taste and rate the reds.  Will history repeat itself?

Includes:

  • Blind tutorial tasting of the current vintages of the white and red wines from the Paris Tasting of 1976

  • An all-sparkling wine lunch between the whites and the reds

  • Tasting will be hosted by Master Sommelier Larry O’Brien of Jackson Family Wines

SCHRADER SHOWS GREATNESS

Perhaps the most famous of the Beckstoffer vineyards, Beckstoffer To Kalon was purchased from Beaulieu Vineyard in 1993. Napa pioneer Hamilton Crabb first planted the vineyard in 1868.  So rich was it with life and bounty that Crabb nobly bestowed upon the wine produced from the vineyard the Greek name To Kalon, or “Highest Beauty.”  The vineyard has produced some of the Napa Valley’s best red grapes ever since and they are available to only a small number of vintners including Shrader.   Replanted in 1994 to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with modern trellising and closer vine spacing, the vineyard produces highly coveted vineyard-designated wines.

Includes:

  • 6 – 750 ml 2003 Schrader Cabernet Sauvignon in OWC
    Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Napa
RP 99 “great richness, power and intensity…”
WS 92 “Richly flavored yet elegantly styled…”

FRENCH GRAPES, CALIFORNIA VISION

Vérité, French for “truth,” embodies the timeless traditions of France and the limitless possibilities of California.  With more than fifty “micro-crus” across four appellations, Vigneron Pierre Seillan carefully crafts each blend of Vérité. This mosaic of micro-crus provides Seillan with the palette of aromatics, flavors, textures and structural elements he needs to craft the wines.  Bound by precision, elegance and grace, Vérité Le Désir is a Cabernet Franc-based blend that exudes high-toned, exotic aromatics, an iron graphite core and pronounced minerality, echoing the style of the great wines of Saint-Émilion.

Cardinale was born in 1982, with a mission to produce a singular Cabernet Sauvignon from the highest-quality vineyards in Napa Valley. All sub-appellations of the region were to be considered, and grape sources could change from year to year, to create the most distinctive wine from each vintage.  Today, Cardinale has far surpassed all expectations. Limited in production, it’s a powerful and seamless Cabernet Sauvignon, with a track record for drinking deliciously upon release and maturing beautifully in the cellar.

  • 3 – 750 ml 2016 Vérité Le Désir in OWC
WS 93 “Intense, with dark plum, blackberry and black currant fruit flavors.  Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec.”
WA 99 “Very deep purple-black colored, medium to full-bodied, the palate is exquisitely delicate and refined, with super ripe, fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing with epic persistence.”

  • 3 – 750 ml 2016 Cardinale Red in OWC
WS 93 “Warm and rich in feel, with a multilayered beam of plum and cassis flavors: ends with a broad swath of fruit and smoke.”
WA 97 “The deep garnet-purple colored wine is blended of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The palate is full-bodied with layers of cassis and kirsch flavors framed by firm, grainy tannins and fabulous freshness, finishing long and spicy.”

UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN

Tuscany is, arguably, the most beautiful region of Italy and is the home of Sangiovese, one of the most important grape varietals in Italy.  Your accommodations will include two nights at the Lenci Family winery guest farm house at Fattoria Magliano in charming Magliano followed by sheer luxury at the Hotel Le Fontanelle in Siena.  Siena will be a centrally located home base as you explore great wineries and cities and revel in the Tuscan countryside.  You’ll be in proximity to Florence, home to some of the most iconic works of art in the world as well as Pisa, San Gimignano and other not-to-be missed destinations.

Tenuta di Arceno is the only Jackson Family winery in Tuscany and is world-renowned for its Chiantis as well as its Super Tuscan Blends.  Tenuta di Arceno was already a winemaking center in the sixteenth century.  The area was once the center of the Etruscan civilization.  Throughout its history, the estate passed through as property of two Noble families, the Del Taja and Piccolominis.  The Piccolominis created gardens and lakes and built many villas that are still found on the property today.  Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke acquired the estate in 1994, one of the first estates the Jackson family purchased outside of California.

The San Polo Estate is the Trinchero Family’s estate in Tuscany where you will enjoy winery hospitality and a Tuscan lunch. San Polo is one of the most innovative wineries in Montalcino.  Located in the original Brunello production zone of Montalcino, San Polo is founded on principles of sustainability, green architecture and social responsibility.

Fattoria dei Barbi is amongst a prestigious group of estates that have played an integral role in writing the history of Italian wine.  The estate is one of only five in Montalcino that have continuously operated for over 100 years.  The Colombini family is one of the region’s most influential families and has produced wine every year since the winery’s founding in 1790.  The estate is currently owned and operated by the family’s twentieth generation who is constantly seeking innovation through research and application of new techniques.  The estate’s name is derived from “Barbo” a reference to the seashell fossils found throughout the vineyards.
Fattoria was one of the first wineries to import Brunello di Montalcino to the United States in 1962.  Today it is one of the most widely recognized Brunello bottlings in the world.

Fattorie Melini is the top range of Tuscan wines from Melini, an historic Chianti estate since 1705.  The Fattorie line uses only 100% estate-grown grapes from Chianti’s most renowned vineyards, creating benchmark wines such as “La Selvanella,” the first single vineyard wine in Chianti and frequent Tres Bicchieri winner.

Includes:

  • Two nights for four people at the Lenci Family winery guest farm house in Magliano which includes a continental breakfast and dinner for four on one night at Fattoria Magliano in their excellent restaurant with authentic Tuscan cuisine

THIRTY YEARS IN BORDEAUX

Start with a representative of the terrific 1990 vintage and work your way up to the 2012 to appreciate the way Bordeaux wines improve with time in bottle.  These wines are from the Médoc and Graves regions (the left bank) in Bordeaux and have been counted among the great chateaux for many decades; several were included in the 1855 Bordeaux classification which ranked the finest wines of the Médoc, and one, Haut-Brion, was counted among the first growths even though it is from Graves.  Red wines from Bordeaux are medium to full-bodied with aromas of black currant, plums, and earthy notes of wet gravel or pencil lead. When you taste the wines, they burst with mineral and fruit notes that lead into prickly, savory, mouth-drying tannins. The tannins are often high enough that wines will age for several decades.  All these wines have nine or more years of aging and should be at optimal drinkability.  This is a truly unique opportunity to experience some of the finest aged wines the region can offer!

Includes:

  • 2 – 750 ml 1990 Château Gruaud Larose Saint Julien
WS 92 “Dark ruby color. Great clarity of aromas, with cherry, mineral, currant and berry scents.”
RP 96 “This wine…is certainly one of the great successes in a profound vintage for Bordeaux…it is complex, with so much sweet tannin and lavish fruit that it is impossible to resist.  This was the wine President Chirac served former President Clinton when he hosted Clinton in Paris…in June, 1999!”

  • 1 – 750 ml 1999 Château Haut-Brion Pessac-Leognan
WS 92 “Seductive juice; gorgeous aromas, full to medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, fruity finish. Very fine indeed.”
RP 93 “Concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. The overall impression is one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness.”

  • 4 – 750 ml 2000 Château Prieuré-Lichine Margaux
WS 91 “A solid red, with big, velvety tannins and lots of ripe fruit, long fresh finish. One of the best Prieuré-Lichine in a long, long time.”
RP 90 “Undeniably the finest Prieuré-Lichine in 30-40 years, this textured, rich, medium to full-bodied 2000 boasts a dark ruby/purple color in addition to a knock-out nose. The wine is full-bodied, and well-textured, with oodles of fruit and glycerin. This is sexy stuff…”

  • 5 – 750 ml 2012 Château Leoville-Las Cases ‘Grand Vin de Leoville’
WS 94 “the core of dark fruit, the sleek finish, harnesses the austerity of the vintage to its advantage and should unwind slowly in the cellar.”
RP 93+ “exhibits a dense purple color as well as surprisingly sweet tannin. Medium to full-bodied with lots of minerality and precision, impressive power, and a rich mid-palate.”
